What is the COOP Program?

The Engineering Cooperative Education Program (COOP) at UPR Mayaguez is a planned and progressive educational program that gives students the opportunity of exploring their career interests in jobs related to the field of study being pursued in college.  COOP students acquire work experience before graduating, earn credits towards their study program, and are paid for their work.

COOP Program Benefits

General RULES for ALL students to enroll the COOP course

Click each number to see the rules.

It is your responsibility to request the registration of the Internship / COOP / course according to your Department, using the electronic sheet (see registration tab). The student who does not enroll in the COOP course during the semester will be inactive and will have to apply for readmission to UPRM Mayagüez.

Enrollment for COOP Engineering courses is carried out by the staff of the COOP Program (not the Department).

After checking that we have the required and completed documents, student will be enrolled in the COOP course. The COOP office will inform by e-mail so that they can pay and confirm registration.

If you are going to enroll in the COOP course, you can only take an additional course with Distance mode (section XXXD). This course cannot be hybrid (section XXXH) or regular (with a defined schedule or synchronous).  Although many courses are attended remotely, only courses with section XXXD do not have an assigned schedule. You cannot take the Capstone course with the COOP course.

The internship / COOP practice must be full time and coincide with the dates of the enrolled semester / summer. The schedule agreed with the company must follow its regulations. If the offer is for a part time job or not industry related, you must notify to be enrollment in the correct course (INGE/INTD/4995).

After enrolling, you must maintain contact with the course professor who will contact you through the UPR-Mayagüez official e-mail. From the start date of classes the professor will send you the required course work and syllabus so it is important that you check your mail regularly.

The student enrolling in the COOP course must agree to make an appointment with his / her academic advisor to make an evaluation of his / her curriculum. In this way, you can ensure that you complete your graduation requirements and how the COOP courses (free elective or professional / technical elective) will be used in your study program. Failure to meet this assessment may affect your academic progress or graduation requirements.

The student enrolled in COOP must sign a commitment to follow the safety rules and prevention measures for COVID-19 established by the CDC, by the company for which they work and the protocol of the Mayagüez University Campus.  For students required to work in the US and enrolled in the COOP course, it is mandatory to have an active medical insurance and is responsible to confirm that it has coverage in the US. They will be responsible for any costs related to medical expenses in case of emergency.

If the company that hires you requests a copy of the UPRM-Mayagüez insurance policy, after confirming (paying) enrollment, you must send an email to COOP.ingenieria@upr.edu writing Liability Insurance in the “subject” and the following information :

  • Copy of confirmed / paid registration (from name to balance)
  • Full name
  • Student number
  • Department
  • Enrolled course COOP (XXXX4995) or INGE/4995
